Producing PGMs Since 1986

Feasibility and baseline studies for the Stillwater Mine were undertaken after the palladium rich J-M Reef within the Stillwater Complex was identified in the 1970’s. By the mid 1980’s an Environmental Impact Statement and a Hard Rock Mine Implact Plan were completed. Initial Construction of the Stillwater Mine was completed by 1986 and underground mining commenced. A 1,950 vertical shaft was constructed from 1994 to 1997. Since 1998 the Stillwater Mine has been producing over 400,000 ounces of palladium and platinum per year.
