Autocatalysts
Autocatalysts are by far the largest user of palladium. Softer thanplatinum, ductile and resistant to oxidization and high temperature corrosion, palladium is useful in eliminating harmful emissions produced by internal combustion engines.
Hydrogen Purification
Palladium's ability to absorb and desorb hydrogen makes it an effective material for filtering hydrogen from other gasses, resulting in an ultra pure hydrogen gas.
Electronics
Palladium's chemical stability and electrical conductivity make it an effective and durable alternative to gold for plating in electronic components.
Medicine
Palladium-103, a radioactive isotope of palladium, is used in the treatment of prostate cancer and is also being studied for the possible treatment of breast cancer.
Jewelry
Palladium is bright, white and light, making it a jewelry metal. Palladium is also used in jewelry as an alloy to optimize working characteristics and wear properties of other metals. China, Japan and other Asian countries represent the largest demand for palladium jewelry.
Dentistry
Palladium-based alloys are used in dentistry for dental crowns and bridges.
Chemical
Palladium is an important part of the refining of nitric acid, and has important uses in developing raw materials for synthetic rubber and nylon.
Oil Refining
Palladium and PGM metals serve important functions in catalytic reactions that are used in petroleum refining.
Fuel Cells
Palladium-bases alloys are being researched for applications in fuel cell technology, an area of future promise for the metal.
Water Treatment
Palladium is a unique and important catalyst being studied for use in removing some toxic and carcinogenic substances from groundwater.
Coinage
Palladium is an attractive metal for making coins. Palladium coins have been minted in Australia, Canadian, China, France, Russian, the Slovak Republic, Tonga and the Unites States.
Other Uses
Palladium is used in reinforced glass fibers, LCD's (Liquid crystal displays), cathode ray tubes in television screens and computer monitors, and optical glass.
