OBJECTIVE
The objective of this policy is to formalize and acknowledge Stillwater Mining Company’s (SMC’s) commitment to the environmentally responsible management of its operating facilities and to the protection, sustainability and integrity of the cultural, economic and natural environment in which we operate.

EFFECTIVE DATE
This policy is effective immediately and remains effective, in its entirety, until otherwise revised or removed. This policy also replaces any and all previous published policies relating to this subject.

SMC strives for operational excellence through environmentally responsible management of resources and assets associated with the production of Platinum Group Metals (PGM’s). SMC will demonstrate this commitment by maximizing recovery of PGM’s in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner and maintain our reputation as a recognized environmental leader by:

• Conserving and protecting important environmental resources and assets through a commitment to environmental protection and where applicable going beyond regulatory compliance standards by establishing proactive environmental procedures, pollution prevention practices and waste minimization initiatives

• Implementing the spirit of “Neighbouring” with local residence and community groups where our mines and operating facilities are located in order to help improve the physical and socioeconomic factors leading to a high quality of life and economic sustainability

• Striving to continually improve environmental performance and taking a proactive approach to addressing and minimizing potentially adverse environmental impacts

• Providing a safe and environmentally focused working atmosphere that protects employees and environmental resources while sustaining a culture of proactive environmental activism and communicating SMC’s commitment to the environment to our employees, customers, contractors and community
