Performance
Stillwater Mining Company tracks safety performance in two ways.
The first is the internal tracking of safety efforts and
activities completed by areas or individual work teams. These
proactive efforts are the backbone of the safety system and
the drivers for continuous improvement.
The second area of tracking is a measurement of results commonly
referred to as incidence rate. This method of measurement allows
Stillwater Mining Company to compare its performance to that of other
mining companies. Stillwater Mining Company uses a workplace injury
classification that includes lost time and restricted work injuries
(NFDL), medical treatment injuries (NDL) and total reportable injuries
(TRI). For these calculations, Stillwater includes the injuries and
work hours for both company employees and its contractors.
Incidence rate is calculated by multiplying the number of injuries
by 200,000 and dividing by the total number of hours worked.
The
200,000 multiplier is equivalent to a company with 100 employees,
each working
2,000 hours in a calendar year. Using the hour value of 200,000 allows
for comparisons from one company to another.
Workplace Injuries
The first value of Stillwater
Mining Company is “Safety First, Production Will Follow”. If safety performance
targets are met, production targets will also be met. Simply stated,
if it’s not safe, don’t do it.

In 2000, the company’s safety performance
was above industry peers. A strategy known as “GET Safe” (Guide,
Educate, and Train) was initiated to deliver the interim goal
of national average. In 2004, this interim goal was achieved.
The current performance standard at Stillwater is that no goal other than zero
incidents and high quality performance is acceptable. Attainment of these goals
will come through manager partnership and support of the systematic implementation
of the GET Safe management systems. This commitment establishes who we are in
the matter of safety, quality, performance and leadership.
The Declaration: Stillwater Mining Company: Driven by the pursuit of zero incident,
high quality performance.
Attainment: High quality performance with zero incidents is accomplished through
the effective guidance, education, and training of a motivated workforce
The Commitment: We are committed to a culture of high standards developed by
employee ownership and involvement, accessed through the GET Safe Systems
