The
safety culture at Stillwater Mining Company is modeled to set
the
tone for everything we do. Everything done about safety is important.
Safety is a value and is never compromised. How we speak about
safety influences the leadership skills people contribute to
the process. If we want to create a safety culture,
we
have to consistently model that behavior ourselves. We believe
a total safety culture is created through the integration of
six fundamental
principles of leadership:
Vision:
To be the safest mining company in North America
Passion:
Show energy, desire, passion, enthusiasm and constant ambition
Honesty
and integrity: Cultivate open and honest communication.
Say what you’ll do and do what you say.
Motivation:
Develop effective techniques to prevent injuries and empower people
to apply them
Self
Confidence: Trust our ability to achieve
Flexibility:
Size up the situation and adjust accordingly
We
have taken a systematic approach to how safety is managed. We are
developing systems, standards and controls that clearly define accountabilities
and expectations. We have created inspections, audits and remedial
action tracking systems to help measure compliance to the standards.
We periodically evaluate the effectiveness of our systems and take
time for corrective or commending actions relating to compliance.
We believe leadership and management are clearly distinct qualities
of equal importance. Creating excellence in, leadership, managment
and the execution of our strategy will result in achieving our vision.
